I would probably have given this book two stars if I hadn't listened to the interview with the author at the end of the audiobook. He talked about how marriage was necessary, yet idealized, at the time of the Brontes and Jane Austen, and then claimed that we continue to subscribe to the idealized version of marriage. This book made me want to go back to school to study literature. Maybe then I'd write a review here that isn't crap. Either way I really liked the characters in this and saw a lot of myself in Madeleine. The writing was really simple and beautiful and I found myself rereading quite a few sentences that were particularly great. The plot was so so and kinda reminded me of an elevated romance novel. Eugenides weaves a pretty complicated plot that follows 3 different characters, yet he develops them all beautifully. The story has a heroine who is really easy to relate to and the novel itself is at times funny, intellectual, philosophical, and deeply depressing. Definitely worth reading, especially if you like reading books about books.
