Loved it. My girls loved it. The end. (are you kidding, I could never leave it at that... I'm only going to add that they are mad at me that we have to read two other books before we can get back to this series... okay that was a lie, there's more. This was not as violent and strange as I was expecting. It was much simpler than I was expecting. The lessons to be learned were marvelous AND subtle, which I think is a big plus for a children's book. That's it.)

Ah, it's been so many years since I've read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Obviously, not nearly as scary to read as an adult as when I was a child. I was a bit surprised by some of the violence, but the same loveable characters are there. The Scarecrow has always been my favorite, for his unintentional use of his "non-existent" brains. The Lion fared better upon this rereading - never did like him in the movies. This was a very pleasant return to my youth.

Getting started with the Wizard of Oz series is a pleasure because they're easy reads and I'm hoping to learn EVEN more about the land of oz. Honestly, I never much enjoyed the Wizard of Oz movie so all this delving into the land of Oz has opened my eyes to this true Ameircan fairy tale. While there are 13 more books to go, I'm excited to see the very different stories that Baum told.

I just finished reading this with my 5 year old daughter, and it's just as magical now as it was when I was a kid. She loved every word! I would highly recommend this as a great first chapter book to share with a child.
