10/2/2018 ~ I always appreciate rereading books, because I notice new things with each reading. Each page links a trait of Frida's with the characteristics of one of her pets. This could be a great book to use when teaching similes.
11/5/2017 ~ Another picture book biography of Frida Kahlo. This one uses her pets as a lens to show various traits exemplified by Kahlo. The detailed author's note explains more about Kahlo's life. Vibrant illustrations beautifully complement the text. ...more

I always enjoy stories about Frida Kahlo - she's fascinating! This shows us a different perspective - a snippet from her childhood and love for animals. I'm enjoying the 2017 NYT Best Illustrated Children's Books - this pick is well deserved! Beautiful colors, lots of energy, and captures the spirit of Kahlo's art.

My copy is in Spanish. Enlightening to try to read it with only 4 years of Spanish many years ago.

A terrific introductory biography of artist Frida Kahlo. It mostly skims over her relationship with Diego Rivera and instead chooses to focus on her animals that inspired much of her work.
The illustrations are full of color and highlight her Mexican heritage.

A little bit different approach to Frids Kahlos story. NY Times best illustrated of 2017.
