I love this book. It has absolutely gorgeous illustrations rendered in graphite and ballpoint pen, then colored digitally. I loved the quest story, the adventures, and the maps and routes on the endpapers. I loved the cross-hatched whale tale at the end, seemingly waving goodbye to the ship and its crew. Children who love animal fantasy tales will also love this book.

There was a lot of hype around this book so I had high expectations. I thought it was okay, good but not great. I liked the conclusion in the end. The illustrations were good. But...not an incredible book.

This was an interesting read. I am not sure students will understand the big idea behind the book. The artwork is creative and in-depth. I am not sure if this will be a winner as a read aloud.

A friendship and adventure story. Soft, beautiful illustrations by The Fan Brothers help tell this seaworthy tale.

11/24/2017 ** Pair this with Jon Muth's Three Questions. Ignore the slight incongruity of the carnivores and herbivores getting along. Friendship is where we are right now; the journey matters more than the destination.

Caldecott ?? Hmmm. Possibly.

Oh, this is just a perfect book and one that would be a great read aloud for elementary school students. It asks some big questions but isn't too abstract for kids and I guarantee many of the adults that are following along will get a little teary when Fox gets the answer to his question, "What's the best way to find a friend you can talk to?" (Answer: You make friends by asking them questions). ...more
