Could an entire orchestra be made up of instruments made from trash? That's the premise of this true story about Paraguay's Recycled Orchestra.
An inspiring story. Promote music or recycling with this one. Or use as an example of a memoir/biography.
Sales from this book will be used to make a donation to Orquesta de Instruments Reciclados de Cateura.

I love stories like that told in Ada's Violin. While the story begins in a shantytown built around a garbage dump and seems like it will be depressing, that quickly changes when Favio Chavez arrives to teach the local children to play musical instruments. The problem is that none of these children's families can afford a music instrument, especially since they are all struggling just to survive. So, what do they do? They create instruments out of garbage. The ingenuity expressed in the creation ...more

Still like that old time rock 'n' roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock 'n' roll

Old Time Rock and Roll lyrics by George Jackson and Thomas E. Jones III, sung by Bob Seeger

One of the most universal lines in those now famous lyrics is that kind of music just soothes the soul. It's not just rock and roll that soothes the soul but many forms of music. Whether it's a portion of a song or an entire symphony, those melodies have the capacit

This book tells the true story of a group of children in Paraguay who were led by an inspired adult to build musical instruments from scrap metal and trash. The children learned to play their instruments and eventually created a world-renowned orchestra that performed in some of the most famous concert halls throughout the world. The book includes internet links to more information about the story. My students were mystified by the story and clamoring to learn more!

I'd never heard of the Recycled Orchestra, and then I read this. Wow, what a story! This is about something that many of us would find simply unthinkable, living in a city that serves as a major landfill for another large city, and how musical instruments made from the contents of the landfill helped an orchestra to gain worldwide recognition. The story is illustrated using collage in a very effective heavily-layered manner. The story follows one of the musicians in particular, a violinist named ...more

This is such an incredible, beautiful story! I wish I had students I could share this with, it'd be a great discussion book for sure. I love the illustrations too, the collage/paint style suits the tale of creating a recycled orchestra really well. ...more

Fabulous book about Favio Chavez and his Recycled Orchestra. Perfect mentor text for resilience, perseverance, and recycling. Great companion book for The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and One Plastic Bag.

It was not until I finished and read the "for more information" that I realized I had seen the 60 minutes segment to which it referred. It is an amazing story and I'm sure kids will love the photograph of the orchestra in the back matter. ...more
