What Members Thought
Troy Andrews (aka "Trombone Shorty") tells the story of his inspirational neighborhood in New Orleans and his musical family and how they set the stage for his own music. At first, he had to make his own instruments, but then found a broken trombone. He was ready to play! Bryan Collier's explanation of his beautiful illustrations and the author's note about his humble upbringing and success add to this lively and inspirational story.

Growing up in a small town in a small house, five rooms, did not mean we were small on music. Engaging memoir that I'll be sharing with the music teacher. Thought the text was great. But the illustrations had some issues; I liked the collage-iness, but I didn't like how Trombone Shorty's face looked deformed in some of the pictures. And he definitely didn't look young enough! I am a sucker for a true story! Of course this is actually written by Trombone Shorty. He not only plays the trombone he sings! I totally see why it won a Coretta Scott King and a Caldecott Honor!

a joyful book that earnestly and effectively tries to portray New Orleans, and its jazz scene. ove that is helps bring jazz and music to the fore, and tells a story about America that we are not always aware of. We need more stories like this.
I liked that Trombone Shorty was not a well known musician, but a talented individual who found his niche and then the author and illustrator told his story.
