A very atmospheric book,set in an area I know well. There are a lot of themes in this book,the clearances and their aftermath,folklore and superstition,injustice and the difficulties women faced in this era,loss and grief. It doesn't quite get to grips with any of them and turns ,disappointingly, into yet another " is she mad,is the supernatural real,why does no one believe her " novel. Despite the 3 star rating, this is a very readable novel, though not quite what any of us were expecting from the cover quotations. It isn't particularly 'chilling' or 'creepy', rather an intriguing story of abduction and murder which unfolds against a background of the aftermath of the Highland Clearances on Skye, and the folk tales that Audrey is tasked with collecting which become interwoven with the superstitions of the crofters.
