This is a compulsive read, though it leaves a nasty taste behind. On the surface, Sam and Merry are leading an idyllic life with their child in a picture-perfect Swedish sylvan setting. We suspect that something is very wrong almost on page one when Merry calls her child 'the baby'. Gradually, the tale unfolds through the eyes of the three narrators (Merry's supposedly best friend comes to visit) until the inevitable tragedy occurs. Well a more despicable set of characters you will never wish to meet. I had no sympathy for any of them,only the baby and poor Elsa. Everyone is manipulative, deceitful, narcissistic and shallow. But,the short,choppy,chapters with constantly changing narrators made this a page turner with genuinely surprising twists. I devoured it in two nights but it left a bad taste afterwards. Even though the characters were vile they were well written. A perfect novel for a journey.
