This is a compulsive read, though it leaves a nasty taste behind. On the surface, Sam and Merry are leading an idyllic life with their child in a picture-perfect Swedish sylvan setting. We suspect that something is very wrong almost on page one when Merry calls her child 'the baby'. Well a more despicable set of characters you will never wish to meet. I had no sympathy for any of them,only the baby and poor Elsa. Everyone is manipulative, deceitful, narcissistic and shallow. But,the short,choppy,chapters with constantly changing narrators made this a page turner with genuinely surprising twists. I devoured it in two nights but it left a bad taste afterwards. Even though the characters were vile they were well written. A perfect novel for a journey.
