This was a fantastic book for Group discussion, and we could have spoken about it far beyond our one hour of allotted time. Most of our group do not, as a general rule, read science fiction, but were pleasantly surprised by how non-sci-fi this book seemed. Yes, the triffids are obviously a major give away, but otherwise this dystopian tale was remarkably plausible, particularly given the socio-political climate of the post-war era. As 'Day of the Triffids' was really quite different to our previous choices, it was surprising that this 1951 sci-fi classic proved to be popular with most of the group, onlu one member disliking it enough not to finish reading it. We did find the writing style and some of the content (the attitude to women) rather old-fashioned. Turned out I had read this before,the minute I read the first line I recognised it. I must have been a teenager then and much preferred the Midwich Cuckoos,still true I think but I was struck by how influential this book has been. So many post apocalyptic novels and films and even the Walking dead t.v show have their origins in this book and probably don't even know it. For some reason I kept being reminded of War of the World's and did wonder if Wyndham was inspired by those invading Martians.
