Parched by Melanie Crowder – 5th Grade and up, Multicultural/Realistic Fiction – This was a really tough book to read. I enjoyed it nonetheless. I found the approach to speak from the point of view of three characters, a lead dog, a young boy and a young girl was a powerful choice. Parched is one of those books that is sure to end up on award nominee short lists and the rolls of editor's favorites. In short, it's the story of a girl and a boy fighting to stay alive in a drought-ridden land. But it's so much more than that, despite its spare length.
