I heard raves about this book at a session at TLA then I actually got to see and meet the author at a Scholastic Author's breakfast where I received the book! I added it to my TBR pile and after some grown-up titles this summer I picked this as my next read. What a story! Four orphans are picked to be groomed to assume the throne after the royal family has been eliminated. One is killed at the beginning leaving three to train, plot, and plan their route to the impossible: fooling an entire kingd

Sage is a street smart, mouthy and sharp witted orphan who bears an uncanny resemblance to a young prince, Jaron, who was assassinated at age 10 four years ago.
Now, the royal family has been poisoned and to prevent civil war Connor, a Carthyan aristocrat has devised a plan to put a false prince, his puppet, in place in the castle.
Sage promises to be a difficult prince. Still, of the four candidates that Connor purchased(yes purchased from orphanages) we believe that Sage will be the young man ...more

This is a delicious title filled with interesting characters, many of whom it's impossible to trust, and various twists and turns that keep the reader guessing about what might happen next. The idea that Conner might try to pass off a street boy as a missing prince works well here although there would be a steep learning curve as any potential royal candidates would be likely to find it hard to acquire the skills and knowledge they would need in such a short time. I loved Sage's personality and

THE FALSE PRINCE was one of the best fantasy books I have read in a while. From the beginning, Sage, an orphan, who is plucked from Mrs. Turnbley's clutches is drug along with three other boys into a scheme developed by Conner, a regent in small country. Conner has cooked up a plan to bring in the kingdom's long lost heir to the throne, Jaron. Jaron was lost at sea when some pirates hijacked the ship he was on after his father told him he needed to disappear in the effort to save the kingdom.

Great story! I think this trilogy is going to be a HUGE hit with kids, especially boys. The story centers around an orphan boy named Sage who is given 2 weeks to train to impersonate the long lost prince of Carthya. His master, Conner, served under the king and gathers a bunch of boys from local orphanages who resemble the lost prince in hopes that one of them will be able to pull off his grand scheme.

4.5 stars for this amazing YA adventure story set in the mythical middle ages. 14 year old Sage is plucked from an orphanage by a strange man on an even more mysterious mission. Sage, though, has never been a kid to cooperate and he gives his benefactor/jailer a run for his money. The plot reminded me a bit of "The Man in the Iron Mask". It is wonderfully complex but fast moving and with well written and interesting characters. Highly recommended for grades 5 and up. I could see this being a big

An absorbing read that captured my imagination from start to finish. The book has everything I like in a story--memorable characters, humor and adventure. Sage is such a fantastic character. I listened to this one, and the audio was excellent. There was even a little extra story on the audio version. We are all set up for the second book. Can't wait.

Plenty of deceit, lies, and excitement. Sage is an orphan who is bought with three other orphans. One of them will be trained to be King of Carthya. What will happen to the other three? Will the true prince appear? The story is fast paced and will appeal to boys and girls. A few surprises add to the story.
