While I enjoyed this book, I thought it went on a bit long after I got the point too often, and mostly it made me want to read the first book, which sounds great. That isn't at all a bad thing in a BOOK, but I think as a Newbery contender, this doesn't cut it. I loved the setting of Mount Eskel, but thought Asland was less clear. Characters other than Miri and maybe Peder and Katar (to the extent that she appears) were fairly vacant. I didn't buy a couple of the main dramatic moments (the sudden ...more

I adored Princess Academy when I read it several years ago! A few months ago, I enjoyed a stage adaptation - which prompted me to finally read this sequel. Much more political than the original tale, this one still features the awesome little Miri doing big things to make her world a better place.

It appears that I read Princess Academy for the first and only time back in 2005, so it was hardly fresh in my memory as I started the sequel. I find Miri to be a truly admirable, but realistic, character. She is intelligent, resourceful, and courageous. I also like that the romance in both of the books seems real and grows with their friendship and respect for each other. The humor is also enjoyable. Shannon Hale has done a fine job of weaving a complex political situation and ambiguous personal ethics into a thoroughly enjoyable fairy tale.

Shannon Hale is one of the most gifted writers out there, and Princess Academy is my favorite of her books -- so I was extremely eager to get my hands on this sequel! It was everything I hoped for: a well-written story expanding on some of my favorite themes (history, letter-writing, memory-keeping, loyalty) and great characters (Miri, of course; but I loved Britta and Esa and Peder and Steffan all over again, too!). By about halfway through this book, I had gotten to that point where I could ha ...more

This sequel to PRINCESS ACADEMY does a great job of addressing the conflicting emotions we often encounter when we've discovered a cause we're passionate about. I'd love to see a book study of this book with PS Be Eleven! ...more

Not quite as magical as the original, but still drew me in. It did have strong hints of Mockingjay.
