Like her father before her, Jennifer has never really felt as though she belonged in the community where she lives. Her classmates tease and belittle her and even make fun of her name and her clothing. Ever since her father's disappearance, Fer has lived with her vigilant grandmother who teaches her about herbs and tries to protect her. But when Fer rescues Puck from wolves, she wants answers about her lineage and journeys to the land where her parents lived, determined to find out what happened

Great addition to the middle-reader genre for fantasy! I really enjoyed the elements in this novel since there was a strong female heroine who didn't stop asking questions (book would have received a 3 star if it wasn't for Fer). The plot was fast paced and the elements of fantasy weren't esoteric, so it wouldn't be an unfamiliar landscape for readers. It was an exceptionally quick read and I can totally see how 3-6 graders would enjoy this story. Reminded me of Breadcrumbs. The grandmother was

Fer finds a boy being attacked by wolves which is odd since she did not know wolves lived in her area. Helping him fight them off Fer takes this strange boy home to get help for his wounds from her Grand Jane a herbalist. This is when Fer's life takes her to new land ruled over by the Lady. Fer suspects there is a serious problem causing winter to take over this new land and leaking back to her home on earth. Fer is worried that she won't figure out what to do until it is too late. Loads of myth

An exciting fancy story about a girl named Fer who opens "the way" to another world where her parents disappeared. She learns that she has magic in her, but she must figure out why winter stays too long in this other world. Soon the strange weather seeps into Fer's own world and bad things begin to happen. As Fer learns to through about her parents and the "lady" if the way, she must make a decision to help this other world. Fer is a brave, strong and faithful character.

Winterling captivated me, and I can't stand that I'll have to wait to see where this story goes next. While I am personally a fan of YA, the content is often too mature for the readers with whom I spend my days, and to whom I recommend books. Winterling fits into that increasingly narrow sliver of published material where what I love overlaps with what I can recommend. Thank you, Sarah Prineas, for writing an engaging, inventive, layered, middle-grade fantasy!

This was a quieter fantasy than Prineas' The Magic Thief, and it didn't draw me in quite as much. I think I'm just more drawn to other writing styles. Part of me also wanted to see more cohesive world building. We got details but, to my mind, not enough explanation. Again, this might be a style thing.

Wonderful fantasy story filled with adventure. Felt connections to C.S. Lewis's The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.

I really enjoyed this one. It's a pretty basic story of a girl finding a new magical world, but it's told really well. I hope there are sequels to follow!
