I kept seeing positive reviews of Moon over Manifest so I decided to read it. There is a bit of a mystery in the town of Manifest, Kansas and it is solved a little at a time as the story progresses. The story takes place in 1936 Manifest but flashes back to 1918. Abileen, a young girl, has to unravel the mystery of the town and her connection to it. I enjoyed reading it though I wish I'd been able to read it in a shorter period of time. There were clues sprinkled throughout the book but I found

I don't usually wait this long to read the Newbery winners... but this one was worth the wait! Loved the story line! Loved the way the two stories wove together... probably didn't hurt that I was driving through Kansas as I "read" the book and could really visualize the surroundings... but just an amazing story! Loved this book!

Abilene and her father have been drifting from town to town, looking for work, for as long as she can remember. Her father, thinking that Abilene needs more, sends her to live with his friend in Manifest, Kansas. She soon discovers a hidden compartment in her bedroom that contains letters written years before. Who wrote these letters and who kept them hidden away? While this is a sweet book and I did like it, I do not understand why it was chosen as the 2011 Newbery Winner.
Loved this historical fiction novel about a girl who goes to live in her father's hometown. It's set during the depression but there is also a mystery that the girl tries to solve from World War I. There are amazing themes of immigration, acceptance, and friendship in this book!

Everything historical fiction should be - the Newbery was definitely deserved. The story within a story was expertly told. The immigrant stories were realistic and true. Abilene can take her place with Mark Twain and Anne of Green Gables. The town of Manifest comes alive through the newspaper clippings and of course the characters as their stories are revealed.
This was a fantastic book, worthy of the Newbery selection. A great story of Abilene Tucker, after her father sends her away for the summer to be cared for by people in a town he once lived. She spends time here, waiting for her father's return, and trying to place him in this town. She meets people and hears stories of years gone by, still trying to see how he or she belongs in this town. The audio was great!

Good book, not much kid appeal. Too many historical references that kids, the age this book is meant for, won't understand.

I finally got around to reading this year's Newbery winner, and I must say it was quite good. I loved piecing the story together through newspaper clippings, letters, and narrative.
