Newbery winner
I liked the ending, but it was a chore to get there. Don't see the appeal and wonder if it would be a bit of hard sell for the intended audience

This young adult novel is beautifully written. The story switches back in forth between Manifest in 1918 and Manifest in 1936. It is a clever and well done device that draws the reader into the story and keeps them interested. The character of Abilene ties the two stories together. She is a sympathetic and beautifully written character. Not only does the story of Abilene and the interesting characters of Manifest make interesting reading but the author also tied in some great historical fiction,

What a ride. I was laughing one moment on the verge of tears the next. What can you say about a book that combines: orphan trains, WWI, Spanish Influenza, bootlegging, and the Great Depression? Lots and lots of plot twists revolve around Abilene went she is sent to her father's hometown. She is bent on finding out as much about her dad as a younger man but noone seems in the mood to tell her much so with her newly made friends she sets out on a mission to uncover as many secrets as possible beca

NOTES:
1936 notes:
Abiline, 12 years old, is sent to live in a rural town in Kansas in 1936 while her dad is working on RR lines. Can't find anyone to talk about or even mention her dad Gideon. Not sure if will be staying at summer's end or go back to him
Girlfriends" Ruthanne and Lettie
Hattie Mae: has been writing a local column in town's paper since she finished HS. Very nice lady.
Book takes place in 1936 and also has a storyline in 1918 during WWI.

Meh. I acknowledge that the writing is quite good, but this book just didn't impress me. I was never really pulled in the story, and it made me sad that I cared WAY more about the flashback sequences than I did about Abilene's current situation. I also kind of think that this book could have been edited down just a bit. Still, I did enjoy (even if I did not love) all of the different threads and the way that they came together. Someone else will probably love this book more than I did.

Had to read the Newbery winner. Set during the Great Depression, I liked it OK. I liked how the story was told, slowly to the main girl by the local diviner that explained several keepsakes she had found in a box hidden in the floorboards. I also liked how it flipped back and forth between 1930s and World War I.
Glad I took the time to finish this even though I couldn't be at book club to talk about it. It was a nice complex read, with a bit of a mystery and a happy ending. Wonderfully written.

I'm so glad this won the Newberry. Beautiful book.

A fabulous story! I enjoyed how Abilnene's story was woven into the town of Manifest's story 18 years earlier. The language was superb. Loved the articles from Hattie Mae that appeared in the newspaper. Loved the ending and how it all came together, with a few surprises!
