Re-read for the third time and I still love this book so much. Possibly more than the first time I read it.
_______

This book caught my eye a number of months ago. As soon as I read the jacket flap I was pretty sure I would like it.
The setting is what first caught my attention. Alternating time periods between the 1930s and World War I. My favorite period of history to read about. And it takes place in the Midwest. (I am a Midwest girl through and through.)
Second, I like a cast of quirky charact

I was shocked when this book won the Newbery as it was not even on my radar. If I had read it, it would probably be on my personal honors list...at least on my short list. It combines mystery, historical fiction and emotional realism moving back and forth between 1918 and 1936 through Ms. Sadie's stories and Hattie Mae's newspaper articles. This works pretty well though I periodically lost track of the characters and was confused about the time period. The list of characters at the beginning was ...more

The winner of the Newbery this year is a fine historical novel for older children and young teens, too. Being from Kansas, I was especially interested in some of the characters. A small town of immigrants gave the author the opportunity to introduce many colorful people. Told in flashbacks to WWI, the story explains the recent past to a girl who worries about her wandering father's history and why he sent her to live in depression era Manifest, KS. ...more

I really liked this book and how it went back and forth in time telling a story of the town of Manifest and the life of a young girl named Abilene and her family and friends. I just thought that it took awhile to get through . . and I am not sure that I would recommend it to anyone younger than 5th grade.

"The movement of the train rocked me like a lullaby. I closed my eyes to the dusty countryside and imagined the sign I’d seen only in Gideon’s stories: Manifest—A Town with a rich past and a bright future."
Moon Over Manifest won the Newbery award this year, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story was delightfully written and the characters flawed and lovable. The ending wrapped up a bit fast, but it was still really satisfying and full of hope!

I loved Abilene and the varied characters in Moon...I liked the way the story moved back and forth in time, slowly revealing a complex narrative about a mining town in Kansas that appears to be boring, but in fact, is anything but...Abilene learns a lot about the townspeople and her own family, all through the telling of stories. It is a lovely book, deserving of the Newbery.

I loved this book. Completely deserving of the Newbery Medal, in my opinion.

It was closer to 3 1/2 stars for interest level, but I thought the story was very well done.

I struggled with this book. I wouldn't say I didn't like it- I did. I just didn't really connect with it or enjoy it much. That sounds harsh. I just never really got into it. I also felt like some of the details that were barely mentioned became big plot points later. Maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention, but there were several times I had to think back and figure out what was going on. So yeah, I certainly didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. ...more

Lots of characters made it a little hard for me to follow, but a great story. Would love to have it in my library and have a few students in mind that may enjoy it as well.

On the cover of this book is a quote from Patricia Reilly Giff: "The best book I've read in ages." Before I read it, I figured she was overblowing it or had a run of bad books. But boy was I wrong; this is an amazing book, and a beautiful and powerful story. Definitely up there as one of the best children's books I've ever read. I'm looking forward to recommending this to kids at work. ...more

Cole read this for school and recommended it. It's been on my to read shelf for awhile.

I enjoyed the mystery of finding out who her father was and the part he played in the story. It was well written and I liked there were things I didn't have figured out until the end.
