What Members Thought

In the early to mid 00's there was an influx of depressing children's middle grade readers. I am still traumatized by Cynthia Kadohata's Kira-Kira. How I hope we don't return to that trend in children's literature. Ofcourse The Bridge Home is well written. It is by Padma Venkatraman. Ofcourse the subject matter is important and everyone in the world should be aware of the millions of homeless and abused children in India. I believe it is just too dark for middle grade readers. The volume is slim

A deeply moving, beautifully written story about street children in India. When Viji and Rukku's abusive alcoholic father begins to turn his fists from their mother to them, Viji knows he will never stop. She is especially worried about Rukku, who is developmentally disabled. They run away to the streets of a nearby city with its own terrifying dangers, but also find allies: two street boys and a lovable dog. The story is told from Viji to Rukku, and we never find out why until near the end. (An

A story that’s both heartbreaking and redemptive. And absolutely beautiful writing. When we talk about windows and mirrors in literature? This.

This super compelling story is about Viji who runs away from home with her younger developmentally disabled sister because her father is abusing them and their mother and their mother won't do anything about it. Viji and Ruutu very fortunately find a somewhat safe place to stay and some kids to be friends with but the very real dangers they face from predatory adults and other kids as well as the daily needs of food and shelter are quite vivid. I think kids are going to love this one.

The Bridge Home was sad, but touching. It is perfect for fans of the movie Lion, based on the book by Saroo Brierley (if they don't mind reading children's books.) I loved it.

This book. This book! I had seen it on so many "must read" lists, so I finally got it from the library. It didn't take long for me to see why it has gotten so much buzz.
Don't miss this one. It is full of so many things we look for when we read, and it taught me so much.

Listened to book. I was a little worried I would have to abandon the audiobook when it started out with a glossary. But it really was ok to listen too.
A sad story of two young girls who have to fend for themselves but some really heart warming moments when other try to help them out. It is sad to think that this happens to children.

Yes.
But that cover...
But that cover...

Even though the Indian children in this story live in a grim reality in India, they have a resilience to survive and lift each other in ways that are so inspiring.

What a heartbreaking, gorgeous debut. I am so glad I read with my ears. The author's soft melodious voice and understated performance was pitch perfect for this story of resilience and forgiveness. Don't miss it.
