A deeply moving, beautifully written story about street children in India. When Viji and Rukku's abusive alcoholic father begins to turn his fists from their mother to them, Viji knows he will never stop. She is especially worried about Rukku, who is developmentally disabled. They run away to the streets of a nearby city with its own terrifying dangers, but also find allies: two street boys and a lovable dog. The story is told from Viji to Rukku, and we never find out why until near the end. (An ...more

An achingly, beautiful novel about four homeless children forced to use their instincts and grit to survive on the streets of Chennai, India. A window into a heartbreakingly, unfair, brutal world where love, compassion and found families manage to survive.

This super compelling story is about Viji who runs away from home with her younger developmentally disabled sister because her father is abusing them and their mother and their mother won't do anything about it. This book. This book! I had seen it on so many "must read" lists, so I finally got it from the library. It didn't take long for me to see why it has gotten so much buzz.

Don't miss this one. It is full of so many things we look for when we read, and it taught me so much.
Thank you, Padma Venkatraman, for taking me to this place.

Viji and her sister, Rukku, who is developmentally disabled, run away from their abusive home. They move into an urban area in India and as part of the lowest caste system, struggle mightily to stay alive. Eventually, they meet two young brothers and together they make their own family. Their first "home" is on an abandoned bridge but when forced to flee they move into a cemetery. While better together, their life consists of trying to make enough money to buy food so that they wouldn't die from ...more

Even though the Indian children in this story live in a grim reality in India, they have a resilience to survive and lift each other in ways that are so inspiring.
