Read this gorgeous book twice this year.

I loved this realistic fiction about four children living homeless on the streets and under bridges in Chennai, India. It portrays the caste system and the abuse to children in a way that is very
age appropriate for a middle grade reader. It was heart-breaking yet still hopeful. I recommended it unreservedly to my kids to read because it makes you more aware of how others in the world live.

This is so well done, but hard to read because it's so sad! Viji and her developmentally delayed sister, Rukku, run away from home after their abusive alcoholic father hurts their mother and hits Viji too. With nothing much more than the clothes on their backs, the sisters find themselves roaming the streets of Chennai, under threat from all directions. The girls eventually make friends with a couple of boys, and together the four form a tight knit group that manages to eke out a life. The scene

This story tugs at your heartstrings, especially as it is an accurate reflection of too many children in India and other parts of the world. Well-written, sympathetic, likeable characters, and a lifestyle unfamiliar to most American children.
