I enjoyed this. At times I loved it and sometimes I felt it a tad overwritten. It's intriguing and I'm glad I read it. Also kind of impressed that it's on the summer reading list for incoming freshman at the high school. I've been telling my eighth graders to read it. For so long, that reading list has been dusy and dry. Someone's shaking things up there. ...more

Well, I definitely do not see this as a Newbery. It was dark, complex and hard to connect to any one character. The language and adult subject matter makes me wonder about the age group. It read like a bad nightmare, and if you’re into that, then that’s the book for you. Not for me! This book had one great thing going for it: amazing writing. I loved the art and the fairy tale world that were created in The Hazel Wood. I enjoyed the sense of adventure and horror. The fact that romance wasn’t the focus helped make it all the more enjoyable. I can’t w

3 1/2. Dark, fairy tale world building. Completely bought into it. And then it started to feel just a little too long.
