This just won the Newberry and I enjoyed it. I liked the characters and what they learned about themselves. A main character was deaf. She is a good writer and these are some passages I thought were well done:

This year’s Newbery winner is a sweet story about new friendship and belonging. The characters are strong and developed. I loved that their stories were told in alternating chapters, because you could really come to know them; I could even understand Chet, the bully, who had learned his behavior from his dad. Valencia was a fantastic character (I wonder if she was the author’s favorite, too, since her chapters were the only ones told in the first person). I loved the wisdom of Lola and Ruby. And ...more

Really enjoyed the ending. I thought it started a little slow.
