Folktales aren't really my thing. And so while this book, based on the Russian Baba Yaga is getting a lot of hype, I just didn't connect with it on any level. I'm sure kids who enjoy folktales will probably enjoy it. The writing is good. The characters are interesting. I just couldn't really get into the plot.

A sometimes sweet, sometimes a tiny bit spooky, re-imagining of Baba Yaga in America (Victorian-ish setting). I particularly liked the changing relationship between Mary and Madame Z, and the fact that it's a stand-alone fantasy. Solid world-building, with the kind of writing that I love without sacrificing plot. Recommended - I'll probably push this one on my 10 & up bookgroup.

A unique, creep yet unexpectedly heart warming "Baba Yaga" tale.

Very fun context, love the connection to traditional tales of Baba Yaga.
