The author's style captivates me. This touching story of Raymie and her two friends is beautifully told. A marvelous, realistic story with a fine Fla. setting.

Raymie is determined to win the Little Miss Central Florida Tire competition so that her father will see her picture in the paper and come home. But first she has to learn how to twirl a baton. A tender story of friendship and bravery. Friendship blossoms between 3 girls who are fighting battles of loss/abandonment, hunger and abuse. The "Three Rancheros" work together through their struggles and have adventures and self discoveries. Throughout the book there was a good balance of humor a heaviness. Though this story tugged at my heart strings and was beautifully written, it wasn't my necessarily my favorite of DiCamillo's books.
