The Reading Countess
Difficult to put down, Jonathan Axier's book, according to the notes at the end, was even more challenging to write. Nine long years and several works that inspired him later, he has a winner. Reminiscent of Coraline, but oh, so much better, The Night Gardener will surely scare the kiddies but only enough to keep 'em turning the pages.

Swallowed whole (that is to say, read in one evening), The Night Gardener plays out in your head like a Timothy Burton movie.

I cannot wait to book talk this one

Mock Newbery 2015 - Fast paced thriller! Brother and sister looking for work of any kind, find themselves in an unusual and kind of creepy home. There's mystery, fantasy and coming of age mixed up in this great story.

Spoiler - It ends with Molly and Kip (one lame leg - parents scarficed selves to save children on boat ride from Ireland) escaping the tree/night gardener and saving the witch/story teller, only to go back and save the Windsor family. Alistar the older brother, helps Kip who he had

Holy cow! This was a great book! It's a Victorian aged mystery story about two Irish orphans who go to work on country estate. There is something strange going on at the estate that seems to be sucking the life out of the people who live there. The writing is awesome and the story is really hard to put down. ...more

Another great example of imagination and creativity at its best! The Night Gardener is slightly creepy and full of heart at the same time. I think Guillermo deal Toro should buy the rights to create a screenplay for this book... He would bring The tree and Night Gardener to life on the big screen! Disney got to it first, so let's see what they do with it... http://variety.com/2015/film/news/nig...
I also loved all of the references to story telling. "A story helps folks face the world, even when

I do not usually read this kind of story. But I did like this book. The girl with the story (Molly) drew me in and kept me reading. And there is sure to be a sequel.

Irish orphans Molly and Kip travel to England to work as servants in a manor house. Setting is creepy on its own but then add family secrets and an ancient curse and middle grade readers will be unable to put this one down.
