I'm coming to realize books like this probably shouldn't be read via audiobook. I could tell I'd enjoy this much more if I read it, you know, with my eyes. Lots of the book comes down to catching the literary references and plays on words and audiobooks are not quite so conducive to such close reading.

OK-I should know by my age not to get my hopes up, cause everytime i have high hopes for something, they end up getting smashed, dashed and drug around by one nostril. not that this book was terrible- i did like it as the rating shows and will probably read the next one in the series sometime(though not in big a hurry to), but it just in no way lived up to the many comparisons with Douglas Adams.

This is the kind of book I ought to enjoy. Not quite science fiction, but not quite anything else either. Certainly an alternate universe book, but also a literary puzzle book. Just the kind of thing a SF fan ought to enjoy.

Either you love this sort of thing or hate it. And I'm not sure where I am in that spectrum. But I'm going to have a look for book 2 in the series.

September 3, 2009 -- I've just lowered the rating to two stars. I tried to get into the next book in the series, and could not d

Some really interesting ideas here, but it has the feeling of all just being thrown into a pot to stew. Hopefully the next books will have a chance to develop some of the ideas further.
