This was a chore, which is not a word one would expect with either genre, the apocalypse or the murder mystery. But there you have it. I came into this read expecting science fiction, perhaps something along the lines of Ben Winters’ The Last Policeman (2012). It was an adjustment for me to set aside that expectation for a novel that is primarily a murder mystery in a dystopic fantasy setting. The Last Murder at the End of the World is a science fiction murder mystery - an uncommon but not unheard-of genre mashup. In fact, it fascinates me how some books are marketed as SF thrillers/mysteries, while others are clearly marketed more towards a mainstream audience. This, I think, falls into the latter category, which is fine, but may get mixed reactions from some readers as a result.
