I think this was an interesting installment for the Earthsea books not because it continued the grand tradition of huge fantasy implications and events, but because it flips our expectations and gives us a very domestic view of Earthsea.
That's not to say that evil things don't happen, because they do, but the scope is pulled all the way back in, with Tenar from book 2 and Ged meeting up again after almost a lifetime, with her as a middle-aged woman and Ged much changed after the events of book 3 ...more

Until the end of the book if you'd asked me what rating, I'd have said 2 stars was all it deserved. While not uninteresting most of the book just goes very slowly, not a lot happened, no page-turning excitement, but the end turns it around just enough so I'm giving this one a 3 star rating. On to book 5 now.

Tehanu was not a bad book, it was a rather pointless and indifferent one. Of course I can't deny how masterful LeGuin's prose is and how awesome that last chapter was, but at the end of the day a book without a strong plot is not good enough for me. There's too much introspection, thoughts, flashbacks and discriminating gender comparisons and very little else going on for most parts of this novel. It is not one to avoid but I can't recommend it either.
