Mahit is a young woman from Lsel Station, a small civilization of self-sustaining space stations that have just barely stayed in an alliance--instead of as a vassal state--with the vast Teixcalaani Empire. Amazing book. I highly suspect it will be on the Hugo ballot this year and it deserves to be there.

Lots of fascinating ideas, including language, culture, technology and how it affects personality and language and culture. All with great characters, a fascinating mystery and a lurking threat that I assume will be in the next book. May 2021 seems a very long way away.

It took a little while for me to get into the story - there's a lot of worldbuilding happening as the story opens, and even though it's nicely woven into the human stories, rather than reading like an encyclopedia, it did make for some dense reading.
