So, in the end, due to the audio book, I really enjoyed this. It took me 3.5 years to read though. But it wasn’t like I disliked it. That wasn’t the reason I kept setting it aside. No, it was more that it was the wrong time for the book and it was taking me too long to eye-read it. I didn’t have enough time and kept losing the plot. Now, listening to the audio book, I was able to listen to great chin is of it and finish the whole book (I started over - at lightning speed) within just a few days. ...more

What on Earth did I just read? What started as an adventure with space necromancers and sarcastic swordswomen turned into an Agatha Christie murder mystery set in a haunted house, which turned into a literal horror show. It left me dizzy but, my goodness, what a ride. This book made me want to stay up past my bedtime. The worldbuilding and wit and the author's timing in unraveling the characters' mysteries, was incredible.

I almost quit before I really got into the story—it was just weird and hard to follow. But things seemed to come together a bit once Harrow and Gideon traveled to the First House; I could sort of see the story beginning to take shape.

I knew this was the beginning of a trilogy, so I am not surprised that a number of things are left unresolved. But Gideon’s story came to a conclusion and at least a few mysteries were cleared up.
