Terry Pratchett has been my favorite author since I happened to pick up one of his Discworld books in Scotland in 1999. Since then I have read everything by Terry that I can get my hands on and suffer withdrawal when waiting for his newest work. He has a one-of-kind, amazing mind. His imagination is brilliant and unending. His wit and insight to human nature are the stuff legends are made of. YA Alternate History/Audio Book
I had never read anything by Terry Pratchett so when I saw Nation in the YA audio book section at my library I checked it out. Here is what it says on the back.
"Thirteen-year-old Mau is the only one left after a giant wave sweeps his island village away. But when much is taken, something is returned and somewhere in the jungle, Daphne – a girl from the other side of the globe – is the sole survivor of a ship destroyed by the same wave.

This just feels perfectly classic in a way that I can't describe. It doesn't feel like it was written in 2008, that's for sure, but it has a timeless, quiet quality about it.
Nation is a book about just that - what the word nation means, especially in light of tragedy and loss. How people of all different cultures can band together and become something more than the sum of their parts. It's at turns very funny, moving, and wonderful. A charming young adult novel about survival, civilization, belief, and the resilience of the human spirit. Given my choice of post-apocalypse, I'd choose this one.
