Gave this a shot. And truly I tried to get into the book. But ... how best to explain this? Like, there's country and there's rock and roll, and there's soul. Not a question of which one is better, just that different people like one over the others. That's the way it is here. If hard sf is rock-n-roll, then fantasy must be country. Just doesn't play as well on my radio, you know. Missin' that tech spark, you know?

This was a fun read. The storytelling is compelling, the characters have depth, and the magic system is unique and very well thought out. There were a couple of things that I didn't love. The world building wasn't quite as good as I usually like, and the world felt very tiny, even when the story was dealing with events on a large scale.
