While certain elements are the same between the movie and book, the sequence of events and key points are vastly different. In some ways, the movie did a better job of establishing the characters. The book focused on the biologist, her life, husband and perspective. Pacing of the story remained even throughout the story. I found this story a bit too insubstantial. There wasn't much for explanations, not much of why anything was going on or why they were trying to figure it out. And then everything just fell apart in no time. It felt unfinished.

The characters are only known by their job titles and the location doesn't get any less mysterious as the story progresses. Very different kind of fantasy/horror story that won't be to everyone's taste - but I guess it is to mine.
