A totally delightful read, both amusing and very touching. I'd truly like to go on with the series. Temeraire is an astonishing animal, and his captain, Sir Laurence, both brave and hilarious with his bashfulness.

This was a delightful little book! It might not have had a LOT of action, but what action it did have was well-described. I listened to the audiobook version, and it was brilliantly narrated by Simon Vance. His austere British accent lent a real air of appropriateness to a Naval Captain finding himself suddenly foist into the world of the loose and casual Dragon Air Corps. Basically the Napoloenic Wars but everyone has dragons.
The alternative history premise is interesting but I found it really difficult to feel attached to any of the characters. I think its the tone of the narrative that makes me feel so disconnected. However the tone works well for book in a thematic way, as it suits a story set in the nineteenth century, I just struggled with it.
I also found the pacing slow to begin with but then picked up in speed in the last thirty or so pages. This doesn't t ...more
