I requested this galley because my friend Cat loooooooves Naomi Novik and I saw it as I was browsing Netgalley. She suggested a reading group, which freaked me out because she's a really speedy reader. Well she's being a lazybones and I finished it before her!

This is a hard one for me to review as Naomi Novik has written one of my favorite fantasy books ever (Uprooted), but this wasn't quite there for me. On one hand, I found it incredibly original, fun, and intriguing; I especially loved our protagonist (antagonist?), El. On the other, it was so complex and a true slog to get through - the worldbuilding was extensive and exhaustive, and that didn't always work for me.
