16 year-old Jacob Portman's grandfather Abe Portman showed him old pictures of children he knew at a home for "peculiar" children while telling him fantastic stories about these children that could control and create fire, invisibility, extraordinary strength and much more. He believed his grandfather when he was a child but eventually stopped believing in the stories because people thought he was crazy. When his grandfather is brutally murdered by a monster HE can only see, his grandfather with his last dying breath tells him to find the a letter from Emerson, a bird and a loop for answers. Jacob doesn't know how to deal with the death of his grandfather, his last words or the strange and horrifying monster he saw. He begins to unravel the mystery in his grandfather's last words after his aunt Susan finds a collected works of Emerson with a letter sent to his grandfather from a Miss Peregrine living on an island in Wales. He convinces his bird-obsessed father to plan a trip to this island to observe a rare bird population while he unravels his grandfather's history at Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Jacob gets more then he bargains for when he stumbles upon a house, the children from his grandfather's old photographs and an adventure of monumental proportions. The great supplements to the story were the old black-and-white photographs utilized to give the reader a sense of what each of the “peculiar” children looked like and their special abilities. Ransom Riggs is a brilliant new author who expertly weaves history and reality together to create a story that was not only fantastical but also believable. Emma, Millard, Enoch, Horace and the many other children were given faces, names and abilities that made them truly unique, entertaining and convincing in every way. Many of the plot twists were unexpected but delightfully thrilling and hopefully a sequel will be soon to come. Highly recommend! Grades 9 and up.

I liked writing and the world and the loop and the wights and hollows and all the characters; however, I imagined more action. Now in the last two chapters (like, the last 100 pages), there was a lot of action; and I loved that part of the book. I thought there would be more throughout the book.
And with Emma, I'm glad they didn't get together because that would have been weird.
