So this book. It was the beginning of all the books with titles consisting of boy and girl names divided by an ampersand. I also figure (with no evidence) that it must be the best. Elanor & Park feels different. There are real stakes. Danger and fear lurk around the otherwise joyful soul of the book. In fact, the dramatic aspects of the novel made the romantic stuff seem dim in comparison, and it would be a lie to say I didn't get a bit bored in places. It's been a while since I read a book about teens that made me remember what it was like to be a teen and fall in love for the first time. Even though it's a sad story, the book managed to take me back almost 15 years in time and feel exactly like Eleanor and Park for most of the reading. (view spoiler)

I read it, then reread it. This is great quality YA fiction, about two outsiders trying to survive high school. But the ominous situation Eleanor is trying to survive at home, and how the love story plays out against that backdrop, make this book a whole other level of good.
