What. A depressing. Ass. BOOK.
Holy crap folks. from start to finish this book just went from annoying to frustrating to clinically depressing.
First off, the main character, Eadlyn, was difficult if not completely impossible to like--I seriously almost didn't continue reading after the first chapter. She's the kind of girl i want to punch in her stuck up, snobby-nosed face. HOW, oh HOW is she America and Maxon's kid. Seriously. She is not only COMPLETELY materialistic, but you'd think someone wit What. A depressing. Ass. BOOK.

NOT open her big freaking mouth and just OFFEND people left and right.
Superficial. Elitest. Egotistical.
Trust me when I say I CAN GO ON!
She is apparently SURROUNDED by AWESOME people, staff, friends, family, and yet THIS is what she is??? I sure as HELL wouldn't want her to be my queen. and she is certainly NOT my kind of heroine.
Secondly, after all the SHIT America and Maxon went through in the first selection, Illea is STILL SHET! Crap. Shambles. (Actually, the situation they are dealing with is eerily familiar to certain situations around the US *Baltimore Riot cough cough*) I mean, damn! Do they ever catch a break???
And third, this First female run Selection SUCKS!!!!!! All work and very little to NO PLAY!!!
So why then, you might ask, would I EVER give such a depressing book FIVE STARS????
Because it is that good.
When it comes to YA, even the best books have trouble with character growth, with cookie-cutter character plots and storyline development. It is not so with The Heir.
I'm not going to say Kiera Cass is a genius.... yet, but it takes awesome skills and masterful cajones to start off with THE main character being COMPLETELY unlikable and turning her into someone the reader ends up GRUDGINGLY liking.... A LOT, all the while showing and sharing a world that isn't any better for the privileged girl, and possibly even worse, than it had been for her mama.
Not only does this book answer some of the questions of the life after the third book for America and Maddox but it show cases the not-so-fairy-tales of loving and being loved. It's not all rainbows and sugar treats. Just like having a great idea to get rid of prejudice and having ideals for a better Illea aren't easy as pie to implement.
This is a multidimensional story with so much too it, it's almost exhausting to read. But the best part about it, is that even though it is just one hardship after another, there is an underline of hope and promise that will make you cheer and rally for that irritating heroine and her counter parts to succeed.

Basically, The Heir is even better than the first three.
Definite Must Read and Highly Recommended.
