What can I say, but that I'm rather surprised!

This book turned around all my expectations. Granted, I had only read the first Grisha book so I didn't have a lot to go on, but I started this with a bit of a bump because I'm fond of Heist novels.

And I got exactly what I expected! Solid plot, interesting characters, flavorful prose with mixed angst, greed, and let's never forgive that never-ending hope!

If this is a continuing trend, and I assume it is, since I've read 9 novels in the last 2 years,

'A gambler, a convict, a wayward son, a lost Grisha, a Suli girl who had become a killer, a boy from the Barrel who had become something worse.

Six people, but a thousand ways this insane plan could go wrong....'

I'm not a particular fan of the 'heist' story generally speaking but every now and then , and probably because I have even made that statement, something comes along to change your mind. This is that book. Loved it. Well developed characters, excellent world building (set in the world fro

Loved the story, the characters (each with their own flaws), the different POVs, though there were a couple of details that bothered me, for example (view spoiler)

Terrific character-driven heist story set in the author's Grisha fantasy universe. You don't need to have read the original Grisha books. (In fact, they're nowhere near as good as this).

There's a criminal crew led by a ruthless young master-criminal and including a spy/thief/assassin, a Grisha, a warrior, a marksman and an explosives expert. That's giving this lot short shrift because the strength of this book are these characters, their relationships and their history. They have to rescue a sci

Love this so much. I recently reread The Grisha Trilogy and liked it so much more than I did the first time. I’m so excited to finally read Crooked Kingdom.

Fantastic YA heist fantasy set in the same universe as the Grisha trilogy. The characters were well developed and the relationships between them very believable. It was also a good commentary on culture differences and what it means to be loyal. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger so I'm glad I waited until the second one w

This is an excellent fantasy heist set in the world of the Grisha. This time, instead of being set in Russian-inspired Ravka, the story is set in the Dutch-inspired country of Kerch, in the port city of Ketterdam.

Even though it used multiple POV'S, something I normally do not like, the story moved quickly and developed very smoothly. This is a credit to the skill of Bardugo's writing. There is a nice balance among the characters and we get to know them through the backstories that are interwoven

“We are all someone's monster.”

This was a pleasant surprise and a great read, combining fantasy with an incredible heist story.

In the fashion of your 'typical' mission impossible, we have high stakes, the gathering of a motley crew, minute preparations, and finally incredible fast-paced action. The world building was also amazing in its details and ruthlessness, with all the fascinating cultures and languages. Bardugo does all this beautifully but as much as I enjoyed all these components, i

A feisty heist! I did enjoy this book but it suffered in that I preferred the Grisha trilogy which I read immediately prior to this. I'm not even sure why.

Perhaps it was the change from one pov to five, I'm not sure. It has less of a fantasy theme in that the group were largely non-magic carrying out an exciting, dangerous heist (I do like that word) whereas the magic dripped off the pages of Grisha. Perhaps being set in a more modern-feeling setting?

I will be reading the next instalment.

I loved reading this book from the very first page. I read this at a very busy time so it took me about 5 days to read, but I could have easily read this in one sitting if I had the time. I was not a big fan of the Grisha trilogy. It wasn't bad, but I often found my attention wandering and was bored. That was NEVER the case with Six of Crows! I think Bardugo's strength is in writing multiple POV stories rather than first person POV. In Six of Crows she has written six clearly written and distinc ...more

This reminded me of a more teenage version of "The Lies of Locke Lamora". Similarities include a gang of ragtag individuals, in this case all under the age of 18, being lead by a mastermind, trickster orphan. Of course, with a talented gang like that you need to have a heist which in this case involves getting in and out of an impenetrable ice fortress.

Overall, this was fun. I went in expecting more of a Shadow and Bone type of story because it is set in the same world years later, but the feel

I've bumped my rating down to 4.25 stars. I can't really explain how I settled on that number. I loved this duology, and it's definitely some of the best YA I've read. However, I did feel this first book was slow to start. I also spent a good part of this book liking some of the characters much more than others. I at least appreciated those I didn't like by the end though. ...more
