Shelves: favorites, dystopian, series-to-continue, fantasy, science-fiction

4.5 stars again.

I had a few little issues with all three books. But the whole is so much more than the sum of its parts here. Make no mistake, this is a 5 star series.

Pierce Brown takes us on a journey across the galaxy, to witness the epic fight of the oppressed against their rulers.

There were unexpected alliances, but also some treachery along the way.
The story was full of awesome moments and painful ones as well.

The military strategy Brown infuses into his plot must be at least a little meta, because "change the paradigm" also seems to be his central philosophy with every book.

In Golden Son, Brown took the foundations of the story he started in Red Rising and started building like a madman. Conflicts went from the structure of the Read for: Shifting alliances, high-octane space battles, plot twists, breakneck plot lines and everything you might expect from the first two in the series, plus a little more.

The military strategy Brown infuses into his plot must be at least a little meta, because "change the paradigm" also seems to be his central philosophy with every book.

In Golden Son, Brown took the foundations of the story he started in Red Rising and started building like a madman. Conflicts went from the structure of the Institute to the more political, cloak and dagger tone as Darrow tries to fight against Gold society from the inside, as well as a wealth of inner conflict as Darrow wrestles with the friendships he's made versus his mission.

In Morning Star, Brown changes things up once again. Like any third book in a trilogy, it's hard to talk about without spoiling everything that's built up so far. But it's fair to say that, even if you had never picked up Red Rising, you would obviously expect the last book in the trilogy to bring everything to a head.

Brown doesn't skimp.

The overt conflict in Morning Star is ramped up to a massive scale, while tying in the twisty tactics and fraught inner politics that have kept you on the edge of your seat through the first two books. Like was always going to happen, the battle lines have been drawn between Darrow's friends, and enough of the characters you've grown to love end up on the opposite side of Darrow to kick the reader (and Darrow) right in the feels.

You get character development, not just from Darrow but from from his inner circle as well and those relationships feel rich and real. In particular, Sevro really comes into his own.

And, like Brown is famous for, there are plot twists. Every time things start going right for our heroes, you start to actively wonder what's about to come out of left field and floor them. Sometimes that happens. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it actually comes out of right field instead.

Brown's writing also evolves through the series. By the end, this bears very little resemblance to YA. Even the language, which was pretty simple to read in Red Rising, has evolved to a more sophisticated style.
