I've been seeing this book everywhere and the title was what first drew me to it. I don't know the author by name and I haven't watched her show either but the blurb still intrigued me enough to want to read this.
What struck me most was her unflinching honesty in this recounting of her childhood and the negative effects of her mother's emotional and physical abuse. She doesn't shy away from mentioning things that cast her in a not so good light either and is clear that she loved her mom and wan ...more

4.5 stars.
Two things sold me on needing to read this book: the hype and the cover. The title is a shocker the first time you hear it and the accompanying cover photo just sells this as a curiosity. Beyond that, I just kept hearing about this book everywhere I turned. And with good reason.
I was not a fan of Jennette McCurdy going into this book. In fact, I barely knew who she was. I was familiar with iCarly and the character she played, but only in a cursory manner. I'm beyond that age set. And ...more

Getting a glimpse into the life of Jennette McCurdy and everything she went through to get where she is today, just goes to show that you don't really know what what someone is actually going through.
I have kids who watched her on iCarly, and I saw her on some of the shows and movies she mentioned while she was growing up. I assumed, as most people do/would, that she was living a glamorous life or close enough to it.

Auto-biographies are amongst the most difficult books to rate. Because there's two criteria - is it an interesting story to share (not everyone's is unfortunately) and was it presented in a way that was enjoyable to read.
Jennette's life story was absolutely worth sharing, particularly with the newest show exposing Nickelodeon. But I'm not fond of the extreme short chapters and some of the glossing over important parts of the underlying story.

I listened to the audio of this and appreciated that it was read by the author. That added a lot to the story, hearing her tell it. I can't imagine dealing with the mental, emotional, and physical abuse she did, but I'm glad that she's on the road to healing.

I work in a hospital and I often think how happy I am to have a boring life. I felt much the same way while listening to this book.

Disclaimer: I didn't watch iCarly and really had no idea who Jennette McCurdy was until this book came out. I picked it up because it was chosen for one of my book club's this month and because of all the chatter about it. However, even without the background, this book was compelling and I see why it's received such rave reviews. I listened to this on audiobook, narrated by McCurdy, and it was difficult to hear but definitely grabbed me. It has some very notable commentary about child acting, t

This was very interesting and also sad to learn about all the background to Jennette’s life behind the scenes. I hadn’t seen the shows she was in and had no idea what was going on for her, this wasn’t an enjoyable read but it wasn’t meant to be. I can’t imagine how hard it was to write this and put all this out there into the public. I’m glad she’s able to focus on herself and continue to work to become stronger with everything she’s gone through to get to where she is today.

I think this was an entertaining memoir about Jennette's life as a child star. Having a mother like she did, her life was spent trying to make her happy, even at the expense of her own happiness and well being. Instead of wanting to grow up, she was terrified to get older because then she wouldn't be able to perform in teen shows and would disappoint her mother. She also found herself being the one who was supporting her family when her parents didn't make enough money but little in their house

This wasn't at all bad, don't get me wrong, but I just don't understand why this merited such rave reviews.
