“No daughter of the Underworld would kill someone who hadn’t earned their place in those hallowed halls"

A story about kids that don’t fit in (for a very good and magical reason), a story about a wayward school, a murder-mystery and a coming of age story. This about sums up this enchanting book. It starts with Nancy arriving at this ‘school’ and you quickly come to realize she isn’t quite normal, nor is anyone else at the school. They have all had their lives changed forever by accidentally entering magical worlds – all unique and all very real.

REREAD 5/3/25
I feel like I read it so long ago. I will still stand by my 5 star rating but I did forget how the character building and the world building tended to drag a bit. Not that long since the book is only 176 pages.
I got so far behind on the books in this series and since it's been about 8 years I thought it would be good to refresh my memory of this series. I still love the concept of the doors that appear and lead the kids into worlds made of candy, vampires or even bones that will da ...more

I really enjoyed this book. I’m so glad I ended up taking a suggestion from someone to read Down Among the Sticks and Bones first even though it was the second book. Since that one was a prequel I came into this story knowing about Jack and Jill’s door and world and how they got to be the girls they are in this story. I think I liked Every Heart a Doorway even more because of that. It helped me know what the other children were talking about and all going through having been through one of the d

I liked this, didn't love it as much as I thought I would because of all the hype surrounding it. I found the main character to be a bit boring and would've much rather read from anyone else's pov. I haven't decided if I will continue to book #2. It did surprise me as far as the plot. I thought it would be all rainbows and it was definitely not that. Maybe it was the draggy voice of the narrator? As I listened to this on audio. Not sure.

I enjoyed this book which i listened to on audio. The narrator was excellent and the narrative really easy to follow. I felt the storyline was reasonably novel involving children who are put into boarding school because of their insistence of having travelled into other dimensions. A spate of murders has everyone at the boarding school suspecting the latest admission - Nancy - but are they correct?. I would read more of this series.
I love the way Seanan writes. ( I don't know how to pronounce her name, but that's okay). This book is the first in a series, I have already requested the next 2 at the library. ( one is HEEEERREEE !! ) The premise of this series is that these children have found doorways to other worlds, but have one way or another found themselves back here. They all want to go back to where they feel at home, but aren't able to unless they find their door again. They are at a school that ostensibly is to get
