I loved how this was centred around a house. I went to an author talk once with V.E. Schwab as the speaker years ago, and she described how she creates her fantasy worlds with a house analogy. How she designs this world as a house with everything in, but closes everything up so no one else knows. Then she lets readers walk past to see the outside shell, or peek in a window to see some of the details, then later on how she might open a door or pull back some curtains so the reader can see further ...more

Finished this a couple of days ago. Fulfilled my need for a gothic novel. First time reading Schwab. I did not expect to enjoy it as much with the overhyped author. It ended up being my cup of tea. The atmosphere, the unknown, it's beautifully written. Promise you to hold on until halfway through and you will fly through the rest.

Makes me reconsider some other overhyped authors. I may need to revisit.
