This is very atmospheric and well written. The book does a great job of creating this gothic mystery vibe and I thought the book was easy to dive into and read in one sitting. If you've liked Schwab's other books, you'll probably enjoy the style of writing and the fantastical elements.

2 stars. Beautifully written and super creepy in its tone and atmosphere but the story and characters were weak and left no impression on me whatsoever and that is extremely rare for a Schwab book. I never did really connect with this book. I saw it being compared to Neil Gaiman. Thee Neil Gaiman and yeah, no. Nowhere near. The pacing of this was awful. Nothing happens until damn near the end. This was ok. I enjoyed the prose and style of the writing, but I wasn't enamored with the actual story. I found my mind wandering to other things while reading, which is a sure sign I'm just not into it. I honestly just don't have much to say about this book. ...more

I don’t fully understand what magic it is that pulls me into the worlds V.E. Schwab creates, but I love visiting them.
