This book was one of the most leisurely reads I had this year. The story flows seamlessly, and even if it’s not the plot itself that keeps the reader glued to the page, the prose does. The book doesn't get the last 1/2 star because I thought TJR 𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘭 toward the end. She tied in all the loose ends too easily. Nevertheless, I will be reading more by this author. ...more

I can't actually write what happens because I'm in such a flux of what happened. It affected me somewhat more than I imagined.
I hate journalist characters. They're usually one sided; mean and corrupt but this was fine. I loved Monique and felt awful for her. Especially the ending it feels sad. I feel exceptionally sa ...more

I waited entirely too long to read this amazing story. I was expecting a glamourous old Hollywood style story. There is some of that element, but I wasn’t expecting it to cover so many other genres with such a powerful, emotional story. It is part historical fiction, part contemporary romance. How shallow are we, to fall for what our eyes only see. People loved her because she gave them a perception of strength, of determination, of success. I pretty much exclusively listen to audio books…so my book reviews could reflect that.

I have heard hype about this book for months and my book club put it on our TBR list. Although it has been massively hyped (and I'm the one that suggested the book to our book club) I wasn't completely sold on reading it. I knew the basics: this book is about an actress Evelyn Hugo and her marriages and affair with a woman. That was pretty much all I knew.
And I wanted to read it based on the hype—am I the only I pretty much exclusively listen to audio books…so my book reviews could reflect that.

I have heard hype about this book for months and my book club put it on our TBR list. Although it has been massively hyped (and I'm the one that suggested the book to our book club) I wasn't completely sold on reading it. I knew the basics: this book is about an actress Evelyn Hugo and her marriages and affair with a woman. That was pretty much all I knew.
And I wanted to read it based on the hype—am I the only one? #dontjudgeme

But this book was SO much more. It's about one woman and what she did to get the success she wanted, the situations and people she took advantage of to get the career she wanted…to bring her out of Hells Kitchen in the '50s and (in the end) gets her to Manhatten in the '90s. Evelyn is an interesting character. I think she is someone you could do a fairly length psychological study on.

There was also a bit of a mystery as well (why did Evelyn choose to tell her story to writer Monique…this was completely unexpected (to me). It wasn't the sole purpose of the book and isn't touched on very often (although I wish that that plot had been explored a bit more), but it was an integral part and because it wasn't touched on more then a couple of sentences when the mystery is revealed it is sort of anticlimactic.

And that reveal shows the juxtaposition between love as Evelyn viewed (and used it) and how someone without the same moral ambiguity as Evelyn views love. And ultimately raises a lot off feelings that would have been interesting to read about. This is intentionally a ~~cryptic~~ poorly constructed sentence so as to not spoil anything.

It really made me think and wonder…is Evelyn a good person? Is she just a person who took advantage of everything she could to get what she wanted—and did her actions her anyone other than herself? She was unapologetic for everything she did—she might have regretted things…but she wouldn't change them and (if given the opportunity) she would do the same thing. So again, is she good or bad? I can't wait for my book club discussion! ...more

Can I just say that this book was just, *chef’s kiss*, amazing. SO amazing. I didn’t find myself very gravitated towards this book when it was first getting the hype that it was. The premise didn’t grab my attention very much and I tend to be very picky with historical fiction. I decided to give it a shot anyway and boy am I really glad I did.
