This was horrifying, so it accomplished that for sure. This could have been a 5 star book, but the first half just dragged too much for me.

However, after getting to that halfway mark, things pick up and get REALLY REALLY weird and disturbing. This is the kind of story that would have me terrified if it were a movie. I don't know why but for some reason, scary movies are a big no for me (I am a wimp) but I could read this kind of stuff with no issues. I swear though if I wake up tonight and am c ...more

The writing felt a bit sloppy, especially some of the dialogue where sometimes characters seemed to suddenly change their minds from one sentence to the next. At the beginning of the book, Howard Doyle revealed himself as a eugenicist, and I thought that might be a major theme of the book. Midway through it became clear there was a lot of inbreeding in the family because he thought the family bloodlines were the best, but other than that it wasn’t really developed further.
