This story was a mystery about a murderer called The Whisper Man, called such because when he killed people he'd whisper to them.

It definitely gave me the creep factor! When Tom moves to a new town called Featherbank with his little boy, after the death of Tom's wife. It wasn't too long after they moved there that a little boy (8 I think) went missing. The detective on the case knew in his heart that he wasn't "just missing," but that he'd never be back. He was right and the boy was found murder ...more

I think my expectations were a little high with this one. While I did enjoy the overall story I think for the most part it was a bit dull at times and certainly not as scary as I had hoped. The concept on its own is rather creepy and disturbing, particularly a Whisper Man who whisks children away in the night. Throw in a young boy and his imaginary friend in new town and a new house and you have a stage set for terror. There were a few times a simple sound of footsteps had me cringing but for th I think my expectations were a little high with this one. While I did enjoy the overall story I think for the most part it was a bit dull at times and certainly not as scary as I had hoped. The concept on its own is rather creepy and disturbing, particularly a Whisper Man who whisks children away in the night. Throw in a young boy and his imaginary friend in new town and a new house and you have a stage set for terror. There were a few times a simple sound of footsteps had me cringing but for the most part the story deals with the relationship between father Tom and his son Jake who recently lost the glue between them, toms wife and jakes mom.
I think there were a few too many random coincidences that took away from the story for me. For instance in the end Tom learns not only did his wife grow up in the same town and go to the same school as their son, she also had a history with their new home, the neighborhood spooky house. Tom’s long lost dad also turns out to work for local law enforcement and of course is the one assigned to Tom’s case. Some of the connections were interesting though such as Jake learning the rhyme about the Whisper Man in a poem written by his mother when she was young. How Tom is able to piece together the villains identity with one picture and a few questions was honestly kind of awesome if even a bit hard to believe. I was often left wondering about Jake though, particularly his imaginary friend and how his father often overheard what sounded like multiple voices. That is hella creepy and borderline Gollum type personality disorder lol. I do think Jake’s imaginary friend (younger version of his mom) served more like a guardian Angel who saved him in more ways than one. Was she really there as a ghost? Maybe, I mean there were so many things she “helped” him with, I can’t say he would have got by without the help. Overall it was a good read, slightly chilling at times but definitely fitting the thriller genre and perfect for those who like to be left guessing! ...more
