This was a cute slo-burn read contemporary read. After the heroines father passes, and a breakup up of her own, she inherits a surprise beach home from him that he used as a second home with his mistress. This double life she learns was going on just as the heroines mom was diagnosed with cancer. Never knowing of her fathers duplicity until now, her romance writing career hangs in the balance as her faith in love dwindles. Of course an arch rival from college and fellow writer is none other than This was a cute slo-burn read contemporary read. Of course an arch rival from college and fellow writer is none other than her neighbor and the two clash at the start, their hesitancy of emotion being the thing that will bring them closer. Of course there’s also a bet thrown down between them for each to write a book and publish first based on one another’s writing style. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the characters and how this bet brought them closer together, honestly setting them off on dates with one another that neither would acknowledge lol. (view spoiler) I did think the beach (given the title) would be a more prominent part of the story and in ways it is, she’s writing a book titled beach read and they live in beach houses and even do visit the beach but it’s the dang winter for a lot of the book and with her being named January I just kept thinking of the cold and nothing like beach weather. I complain that Emily Henry's books are repetitive, but I keep coming back for more. I can't stop...I won't stop! I love a cheesy rom com!

Cute story, easy read, and I love Julia Wheelan's narrating. A solid 3.5***.

A romance author and a literary fiction writer end up living next door to each other during a period when each is experiencing writer's block. January has had a bad break-up and learned unbelievable info about her father, so is at a low spot emotionally also. They challenge each other to write in the other's genre. What ensues is not just a romance but a book about discovering yourself. A look at the writing process was interesting and the banter was fun.
