House of Earth and Blood Review on K-Books

I have been a huge fan of Sarah J Maas since she released her debut, Throne of Glass. I have since read and loved every single one of her books so you can imagine my utter excitement to get my hands on her very first adult fantasy novel. House of Earth and Blood was most definitely my most anticipated release of 2020 and I wasn't disappointed at all. What an absolute gem of House of Earth and Blood Review on K-Books

I have been a huge fan of Sarah J Maas since she released her debut, Throne of Glass. I have since read and loved every single one of her books so you can imagine my utter excitement to get my hands on her very first adult fantasy novel. House of Earth and Blood was most definitely my most anticipated release of 2020 and I wasn't disappointed at all. What an absolute gem of a book this is.

House of Earth and Blood has everything you could possibly want in a fantasy novel. You have witches, angels, fallen angels, shifters, fae... you name it, it is in this novel. Sarah J Maas has weaved an incredibly complex world filled with so many of these creatures... but wrote in a totally new and fresh way. I can't even count how many books I've read in the past with these types of creatures but I felt like I was hearing about them for the very first time while I was reading this book. It's fresh, new and completely unique.

As with the majority of fantasy books it took me a while to get into it. In the first few chapters there's a lot of information for you to digest but after a few chapters something happens that completely grabbed me. I'll be honest before this happened, I was struggling a bit with the book. It was incredibly slow to start but it was so worth persevering because what was to come was completely epic! We follow this story through Bryce's eyes and she is such a complex character and I truly loved her. She has been through such awful things in her life and I felt absolutely everything along with her. To me this is the sign of a phenomenal storyteller. If I can feel everything along with the characters then they have done their job perfectly. I felt everything while reading this book. I was heartbroken and then happy, and then heartbroken again. It was definitely an emotional rollercoaster ride.

House of Earth and Blood was the perfect start to a epic series. I truly loved this book and while it's not my favourite book of Sarah J Maas' it certainly has the potential to become my favourite series of hers with the future books. From her other series I have found that her books later in the series are often my favourites. I did feel like House of Earth and Blood maybe didn't need to be quite as long as it was. At 800 pages, it's a huge book for the first in a series and I do think some of it could have probably been cut out without losing the effectiveness of this story but I did still love it and I can't wait for book two... I just know it's going to be phenomenal!

Although I still think SJM uses the verb "snickered" too often, I had fun reading this book. I never really like when the perpetrator of the crime does a big reveal, with every detail of the crime, neatly wrapping up a plotline - helpful when everything is witnessed and recorded no less. But, the rest of the climax was engaging, with scenes of true heart-string tugs. ...more

I loved this! Definitely the best start to a series by Maas so far. The side characters are amazing. I feel so invested in these characters that I was bawling while reading.
