Probably closer to a 3.5 because it wasn't until the second half of the book for me to feel connected to the story and characters. It's got a fantastic premise and setting, but because this is the first book in a unique series much of it is spent setting up the series. Which is good, but it became so information heavy that I struggled to really feel engaged with what I was reading.

I have a conflicting relationship with Bardugo's books. Never got into the Shadow and Bone trilogy back when it came out, but loved the Six of Crows duology so I knew when this series started I would give it a chance but wasn't sure what to expect. I'm so happy I picked this up because it had so much I've been wanting in a fantasy and it had been so long since I read a world I absolutely loved!

2 stars. I don’t get the hype for this one at all. I loved the writing style, but I was expecting that going into it because Bardugo is a wonderful writer. However, her characters (outside of The Crows) just don’t stick with me and Alex Stern was no different. I couldn’t stand that girl and she tap danced all over my nerves for 400 something pages. She’s a pain and a try hard and so unlikable. I never grew to care or like her therefore I didn’t care about anything she was doing or had going on.
