What Members Thought
Actually, this was more memorable for the heart-tugging bits for me than the funny bits. Maybe I'm just emotional today... but I teared up and out right cried twice!
Total exaggeration, of course. Nobody's like that. But it captures the gossip, snobbery, over-the-top waste and family meddling very well.
Also - having lived in Hong Kong for 2 years, I can attest (from both my single and married friends) that Asian men who live in Asia who are raised in privilege really think the world of themselves ...more

3 stars. This was very entertaining, if not a tad bit too long. It’s a little over 500 pages and it didn’t need to be if I’m being honest. A lot of it, particularly in the middle just drags on and on.
I liked the writing and I liked how over the top ridiculous all of this was. That was fun and there were some things that did get a laugh out of me. There’s a huge cast of characters and majority of them are insufferable but there were a few that I did like and that was Rachel, Nicholas and Astrid. ...more

Crazy Rich Asians is a story centering around one family as they try to figure out what to do with Nick Young bring home a girl that they say isn't good for him. The drama is never ending as one situation after another comes up.
There are a lot of positives to this book, but I'm going to start with the negatives so that I can end on a good note. Throughout this, there are a lot of characters to get to know and follow. It took me a long time before I felt like I had an understanding on who was ...more

This book was a lot of fun but I could tell within the first 2 chapters that the movie is going to be so much better. This book had a lot of fun characters and it was funny but there was this constantly rapid-fire changing of perspective that made it hard to follow at first and then even after I got used to it it became annoying. I feel this could be done so much better a movie, and I felt while reading that this was written to be a movie.

I loved this book! I appreciated the footnotes as the story went along to help me understand what various terms meant and that helped me appreciate/understand the culture a lot more.
Honestly, I didn't have a lot of interest in reading this book when I first saw it. I'm so glad that I changed my mind and gave it a chance. I loved the humor in it, I thought the characters were very well-developed and I love that there were so many chapters that focused on each character and relationships, etc. I t ...more

Crazy Rich Asian tells a story about Rachel Chu who dates a Singaporean most rich family's heir, Nick Young. And apparently Rachel never knew about Nick's rich family until she went to Singapore herself.
Well, as an Asian person who were born and raised in Asia myself, I would say that this kind of premise is very very common in Asia. Super rich male character, poor and clueless female character, rather vile soon-to-be mother in law, overbearing cruelty from other female competitors. It's noth ...more

This book is RIDICULOUS. I really mean that - these are CRAZY rich Asians: crazy rich, and just plain crazy! It's also really funny (and offensive). The plot is fairly... standard? I don't know - there wasn't anything that really stuck out (apart from the overly saccharine ending bleh) but I started off really enjoying it.

I didn’t have many expectations for this book but I was pleasantly surprised. I don’t know much about Chinese culture so it was very interesting to learn some things while I read. I enjoyed the storyline too. It’s strange how people create these standards that they need to follow even if they are unhappy. I plan to continue the series.
